Automatic vs Quartz: Which Movement Is Right for You?

Mechanical poetry or quartz precision — a clear-eyed look at the trade-offs between the two great movements.

Quartz watches are extraordinary feats of engineering. They keep time to within seconds a month, they cost very little to maintain, and they ask nothing of you. Automatic watches ask for everything — your wrist, your attention, the occasional adjustment after a long weekend off — and give back the only thing a quartz cannot: the small, alive feeling of a mechanism turning against your pulse.

An automatic movement is wound by the motion of your wrist. A rotor inside the caseback turns as you move, tensioning a mainspring that releases its energy through a regulated escapement. It is, in miniature, a tiny engine — and like any engine, it rewards being driven.

If you want a watch you can forget about, choose quartz. If you want a watch you can fall in love with, choose automatic.
